Results from a Morgan Quinto Corporation report has named the City of Camden, New Jersey the nation's most-dangerous city. Camden replaces last year's dubious top spot from Detroit, Michigan, which was named the second most dangerous city. Rounding out the top five are Atlanta, Georgia; Gary, Indiana; and St. Louis, Missouri.
The annual report, named Crime City Rankings, saw the safest cities being, 1. Newton, Massachusetts; 2. Brick Township, New Jersey; 3. Amherst, New York; 4. Mission Viejo, California; and 5. Clarkstown, New York.
The city's rankings are based on six crime categories that includes murders, rapes, robberies, aggravated assaults, burglary and auto theft. A total of 350 cities (with populations greater than 75,000) were analyzed and compared. Crime data was derived from the 2003 statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
City officials in Camden were quick to downplay their dubious ranking. City Co City Councilman Ali loan-El was quick to point out that Camden's poverty is an important contributing factor to its high crime rate. He contined by stating the significant measures the city has made to reduce crime in the city by providing the city's residents with jobs, training, and opportunity.
