I'm thinking about building an addition to my home. How many hoops will I have to jump through in order to get a permit? Would you suggest doing it WITHOUT a permit?

You should get a permit otherwise you may face fines and stoppage of work. In bigger cities they may have a specific 'fast track' time to go in for small home additions so you won't have to wait in line with everyone and their mothers.

nah dont' get a permit. If you're doing work in your backyard, for instance, and it's out of sight, why pay the city fees?

Get a permit when you hire someone to do the work, sa that his work gets inspected. Don't bother, if you are doing small renovation or repairs.
